Facebook. Positive or Negative?

In todays society social networking is something that just about everyone uses to communicate with one another. While Myspace was before Facebook, it is said that Facebook has taken us to a whole new level with its new medium which allows us to communicate with anyone around the world.

Like most things in our society they come with both positive and negative effects, but most of which are still being learned or studied by researchers. Although I honestly don’t think there are any positives effects that Facebook has on our society, all but one, I do believe that it does have more negatives.

However I did find two positive effects that Facebook may have on our society or even on us as individuals. The first being the most well known stated in an article from the Detroit Free Press 2014, by Marco della Cava: “10 Years Later: How Facebook Changed Our Lives” is that Facebook is a platform for people to connect over long distances or even reconnect over lost years. This helps our society especially who in America have family all over the world and allows them to communicate wherever whenever. Although it was tough another positive you could say about Facebook is that it allows people who don’t have many friends to be able to find new ones. For instance, Jhon S Lam, from homebiz.bukiki.com shares that shy people for example may find it helpful in social interaction to make friends and share their thoughts easily rather than person to person.

For the many negative effects that I believe Facebook bring to our society as a whole two really stood out to me. The first being is that it can be a very big distraction. Like most things in life distractions are all around us and its up to us as decision makers to decide whether or not something is worth our time. I truly believe that time wasted on Facebook could be used for something better, something that can benefit you in life, rather than looking up what Johnny is doing on Tuesday night. According to BBC News: Technology, in an article posted on August 15, 2013 titled “Facebook use 'makes people feel worse about themselves'”, it is said that Facebook can cause negative psychological consequences to ones life. In this study results found that the more people used Facebook, the worse they felt afterwards, and that the more participants used the site the more their life satisfaction levels declined.

To me the negatives definitely outweigh the positives because the only thing that could be beneficial to people is that they have that platform to be able to communicate with one another and thats it. I think that Facebook is just another distraction in this busy world and for my own personal use doesn’t help me in any way. I deactivated my Facebook account over a year ago and I most likely will not go back to it only because I know that I can be without it and be okay with that.

  1. Hey Mike! I disagree with your opinion that Facebook holds more negatives than it does positives. I think that it really depends on the user’s decision on how they use Facebook. If the user decides to be on it 20 hours a day and doesn’t ever go outside, or interact with the outside world; that is the individual’s poor choice. I deactivated my Facebook a year back but rejoined again this year to connect with more loved ones, like old high school friends, and many of my older extended family members. Twitter is my favorite social networking site, but I use it more for news and events, and less for communication with my loved ones, which is why I have a Facebook. It’s nice to be able to see pictures of your extended family living their daily lives. I agree with you that we could live without our Facebook but it’s a nice outlet to use to keep in touch with loved ones. I also think that Facebook is a distraction if you make it one. I usually only check my Facebook when I am bored or have a purpose in my mind for it, so it is not a big distraction in my life, although I think it was more of one for me when I was younger in high school. I believe that it has more to do with how the individual uses Facebook that can make it more positive or more negative.

  2. I believe that facebook has many more uses then communication. It can be used as a means of journaling life events. Facebook keeps track of time and day of the post so you can always reference what you were doing at a given moment in time. It also allows someone to make a collage of personal interests, likes, hobbies and anything else that might define a person. By including all of these things a facebook becomes a digital reflection of oneself. Also, based on likes, a person can receive up-to-date information regarding things that they like or that are important to them. I have President Barrack Obama as one of my likes and I periodically receive information from his administration. In this respect the news feed provides me with both entertainment and news. Overall I feel as though it is very important to look at all that facebook has to offer and utilize all of its features to gain what it has to offer.

  3. Mike, I do agree that there are a lot of negative things about Facebook but I don't believe that they completely outweigh the positive aspects. Like you said, you don't have a Facebook page because it doesn't help you and doesn't really appeal to you. A lot of kids do get too distracted by Facebook, going on it constantly on their phones, laptops, or iPods, and it can make people upset. But if this is the case they should just delete their Facebook. If more people realized that they don't need a Facebook to survive there wouldn't be so many problems. However, saying that Facebook itself is the cause of the negative things isn't really fair. People make Facebook what it is; ultimately making it seem like a useless site. It is still a useful and easy way to communicate. It helps businesses and organizations gain new consumers. News travels very fast over Facebook as well, informing people about things going on not just in their own community but all over the world. Liking a certain page can also help you get information about certain things that you are interested in. Facebook may have negative aspects, but mostly everything on the Internet does and we should still consider the postitives.
